Description: Acoustic Guitar - 1966 Rubio classical guitar
I am selling this magnificent 1966 Jose (David) Rubio guitar. This guitar has only had one owner and is in near mint condition. It was refretted by me and plays like a dream.
This guitar is from the best vintage of Rubio guitars IMO. He was actively working with Julian Bream and was located in NYC. According to Bream, he approached Rubio in the mid 60's for some repairs to his Bouchet guitar. He suggested that Rubio make some copies. This guitar is not a copy but it is his interpretation of Bouchet's bracing system. A few years ago I restored a 69 Rubio, which was braced differently so I believe that he used this pattern for no more than 4 years.
It is a very powerful guitar, big basses and singing trebles. The tone is exactly what you hear on 20th Century Guitar, on which Bream used a 65 Rubio. It has great tonal capacity and is very even up and down the registers. The guitar feels electric in the hands, very vibrant and alive. This is the guitar I take out to play when I feel like playing guitar and I have been enjoying it tremendously.
I believe that Rubio is highly undervalued. He is the only luthier associated with Bream not to be priced in the stratosphere (Bouchet, Hauser and Romanillos) but I think collectors are going to be waking up to his instruments. This is a very impressive instrument for the player and collector alike.
