The top is made of two-piece, wide, even-grain spruce with
violin corners. The upper eye of the f-holes is oval and the
lower eye is 2.5 times larger than the upper. There is
purfling around the top and back of the instrument. This
purfling is the same as the purfling inset at the edges of
both the top and back.

The deep, maple ribs have no exterior lining. They do have
spruce interior linings.

The round back and ribs are made of quilted maple. A
distinctive quarter cut allows the back to curve inward to
allow a greater ease of playing. There are nine original
spruce cleats at the back of the center seam. There is also a
raised section at the sound post in the interior of the back.
The edges of both the top and back are raised.

The pegbox was originally constructed for a 3-stringed
instrument. At the base of the neck, at the neck block, ebony
strips line the seam between the ribs and butt.

The varnish is original and is brown over a gold ground. The
varnish is transparent and very successful.
