Description: Double Bass (Contrabass) - German factory plywood bass, labeled Nürnberger
German factory plywood bass, labeled Nürnberger, Bohemia, 1955. This is a very solidly built instrument with a big sound that carries well and has come in handy on lots of gigs with no amp. If I get the chance I will try to get some sound clips up to go with the pics in the link above. Very good, playable condition. High action. Old heavy gauge Spiros. Hardwood fingerboard (possibly beech?), but not ebony. There is no endpin -- I use the old whittled toilet plunger method and it's worked out great. (Hey, lots of folks like wooden endpins! ). Minor crack on rib near endpin hole repaired a year ago. Repair is holding up fine. New Despiau bridge, aged maple, added a year ago. Sound post was set in place by luthier a few weeks ago.
Recently appraised by the same highly regarded luthier and I am going by that number -- asking $2000 for the bass plus a used Mooradian bag, $1900 w/o bag. Will consider all reasonable offers. Would prefer not to ship but I can be convinced. That would be extra (duh). I am located in Western CT, on the NY border, about 1 and 1/2 hours north of midtown Manhattan. Any questions, just ask and I will answer promptly and honestly.
