Description: Double Bass (Contrabass) - Late 19th Century Tyrolean Flatback
This is a true 19th century Tyrolean flatback, 3/4 size. Probably made in the Italian part, known as Sudtirol, judging by the attention to detail (purfling front and back) and Italian sound. I bought it in 1992 from the bass player with the NDR Big Band in Hamburg, Germany. Before he got it, it had reportedly spent some 30 years in a barn in Poland. It was rough, but was completely restored by Rainer Knobel, luthier to NDR, Hamburg State Opera, and the Hanover Symphony, among others. It was appraised in Chicago at $10,000 US, I am asking $8,000. I've used it for both jazz and classical music.
