Description: Double Bass (Contrabass) - Upright Bass 1890s Hungarian
Hungarian Double Bass, 3/4 size. Speaks easily, has a rich and warm tone, the tone is consistent across the strings, very clean in thumb position. I've played it since 1992, Jazz, Classical, shows etc. This is a restored instrument. Neglected for many years, it was repaired by luthier Rainer Knobel (google kontrabasswerkstatt) of Celle, Germany, on behalf of the NDR Big Band in Hamburg. As an indicaor of the quality of workmanship, notice the purfling and binding. I had a verbal appraisal of $9,000 replacement value and $7,500 approx. retail value from luthier Mark Sonksen in Chicago (google sonksen strings). I am asking thousands less than this intrument is worth, in terms of workmanship, materials and sound. A bassist with the Florida Orchestra, based here in the Tampa Bay area, viewed this instrument and gave it high praise. This bass will be shown to experienced bassits only.
