This was the first year of production of the famed 'Chu Berry' or 'New Wonder' saxes. This sax, [ser. no.153,XXX] has a silver matte finish with gold bell wash. The silver is 99% intact. It has been professionally overhauled using Prestini pads with plastic domed resonators. It has the 'nail file' G# key, the sculpted palm keys, microtuner neck, and rolled tone holes. It comes with the original Conn case. Mechanically, this horn is in excellent shape and sounds as good as it looks. It comes with the original C Melody mouthpiece, ligature and reed cap, for collectors purposes, but for the best sound, I've had good results with both alto and tenor mouthpieces. With an alto mouthpiece, it screams effortlessly in the high and altisimo registers and with an Otto Link tenor mouthpiece, it has the fat tenor sound in the low range. This horn turned up at an estate auction in Tennessee. It appears to have been owned by a Mr.Hadew. He very lightly scratched his name below the serial no. Other than some minor silver wear on a few keys, this is the only other flaw I could find on this horn. With new pads, domed resonators and an expert setup by Shen-Valley Band Instrument of Harrisonburg VA, this sax sounds better than it did in Mr. Hadew's day. Email for more pictures.
