Description: Saxophone - Extremely Rare Padless US Selmer Tenor Sax

Serial #27356. This unique padless design was produced by Buescher for Selmer in the USA from 1938-41. Unlike traditional sax designs, the "padless" sax uses flat metal plates to cover the tone holes, which have gaskets inset around them to form the necessary seal. (All other aspects of the sax design, including fingerings, are standard.) On this instrument, the original cork gasket o-rings, which dried out, have been professionally custom-replaced with leather. Original neck in excellent condition.

The sax has a lovely sound. My understanding is that the tone was somewhat bright for the time of its manufacture, perhaps because the metal plates don't absorb sound the way pads do. By today's standards, however, the tone is not overly bright at all.

This instrument is in excellent mechanical condition and, other than some wear on the finish, looks great. (One small dent has been pulled; no solders.)

Original leather case included. The case is scuffed but in good condition except for the handle, which has a small piece of duct tape at each end.

If interested, please email. I'll be happy to answer any questions and/or send pictures of the instrument.

Information about the padless design is available at the link below . Pictures of this instrument's sister -- one serial number away (#27357) -- can also be seen there.
