Violin Description: Violin for sale - GUARNERI DEL GESU, 1742

GUARNERI DEL GESU, 1742 A very fine Cremona fiddle by Guarneri del Gesu, 1742.
In a wonderful state of preservation, without a crack.
The original neck lifted at the heel and re-angled.
The highly transparent top varnish is very thin, of a fiery orange-brown color, and laid over a thick golden yellow ground. The two piece spruce top is of fine to medium grain with saplines running through both soundholes, the sapline to the bass side being more prominent.
The two piece maple back of broad to medium figure, slanting slightly downward at the joint. Traces of the toothed plane used by Guarneri del Gesu are clearly visible on the interior surfaces of the back and ribs. These are also slightly visible on the exterior of the ribs, especially near the endpin, just as can be seen on Paganini's violin, "Il Cannone", also of 1742. Slight tearout of the maple in the purfling groove, the purfling being deeply imbedded, slightly uneven. This violin is without question authentic and clearly a near bench-mate to "Il Cannone". Inimitable tone quality of great carrying power. NOTE: THE VIOLIN TO THE LEFT IN THE IMAGE IS FOR SALE. THE VIOLIN TO THE RIGHT IN THE IMAGE IS "IL CANNONE", NOT FOR SALE.
